GPS methods can achieve highly accurate OS national grid coordinates; the OS digital map is historically related to the 1:1250 scale mapping series. Although using essentially the same coordinate system GPS data and OS maps are derived differently and are designed to serve different markets.
The application of GPS may not be appropriate for all sites. For flood risk planning in the UK it is essential. It offers a highly productive data capture solution yielding substantial advantages over other methods with significant cost and time benefits. Surveys are completed faster and more accurately. It is highly adaptable and is unencumbered by the limitations that affect even advanced total stations.
There are certain environmental restrictions – GPS doesn’t react well to the presence of trees and tall buildings – but we have adopted dual technology solutions to extract the advantages of both systems and overcome these obstacles.
If you are considering the application of GPS give us a call us and will assess whether it will bring benefits to your next project.
